Fresh quake hits Indian islands

January 3, 2005 - 2:52PM

A strong earthquake struck in the seas near remote Indian islands that have been jolted in recent days by aftershocks from the giant quake that helped devastate vast areas of South Asia, Hong Kong seismologists reported today.

The 6.2-magnitude quake hit near the Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal at 1541 GMT Sunday, the Hong Kong Observatory said.

The seismologists said the tremor's epicenter was about 300 kilometers west-northwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of the Indonesian province hit hard on December 26 by the 9.0-magnitude quake and the tsunamis the tremor created.
