Hong Kong's leading English-language daily, the South China Morning Post, says it has staged a Buddhist ritual to exorcise ghosts haunting its new offices.
Two Buddhist monks performed the ghost-cleansing ritual at the paper's new offices in the east of Hong Kong island yesterday, attended by a number of department heads led by the paper's chairperson Kuok Khoon Ean. During
the half-hour ceremony, the monks attempted to banish a restless spirit, believed to be based in the ladies' toilets.
"Fate is at play here, because the spirit wishes to rest in peace and called out for help by making its presence known," the Buddhist master, the Reverend Sik Wing-sing said. Since moving into the new offices early this month,
stories have abounded of strange noises being heard coming from the ladies' toilets.
"It sounded like a sigh or heavy breathing and then there was a strange rustling, but not like that of paper. I was terrified because I was certain I was the only one there," a staff member named Winnie Ho was quoted
by the paper.
Sik said ghost-appeasing rituals in Hong Kong were not rare as at least 40 to 80 such exorcisms were held every year. He had also performed similar rites at the former Bank of China building in the banking district of Central
said to be haunted by numerous spirits.
